Set Up the FB Messenger Menu

The FB Messenger menu is the persistent menu shown behind the hamburger button in a Facebook Messenger chat. It appears whenever a user opens a chat with your page and can hold up to 20 buttons that link out, opt users into a topic, or trigger an automated reply.

This tutorial walks through opening the menu page, understanding the button types, activating the menu, adding and editing buttons, reordering them, and reviewing the live preview.

Before you start

  • A connected Facebook channel (see the "Connect a Channel" tutorial).
  • An active Messenger Get Started button on the selected channel (see the "Set Up the Messenger Get Started Button" tutorial).

    Open the FB messenger menu page

    From the left sidebar, under FB Messenger, click FB messenger menu. The page lets you configure the persistent menu shown in the FB Messenger hamburger button.

    Use the Insights button in the top right at any time to review how your menu is performing.

    Learn the button types

    Expand the About FB Messenger menu section to review what the menu can do. A menu can contain up to 20 buttons of three types.

    Link Button redirects users to a specific URL, such as a deep-link for a reward. Opt-in Button lets users subscribe to a topic. Post-back Button triggers a message and receives a response, such as a carousel, another message, or a single offer from a web shop.

    Make sure Get Started is active

    The Messenger menu requires an active Messenger Get Started button on the same channel. If it is not set up, the page shows "Activate Messenger Get Started first" with a Set up Messenger Get Started button.

    Click that button to configure Get Started, then return here to continue.

    Select the channel and activate the menu

    Pick the Facebook page from the channel selector (for example "Dev.test.tom10"), then turn on the Activate messenger menu toggle. When it is green, the menu is live.

    Keep the notes in mind: a new menu replaces any previous one, and it may take up to 24 hours for the updated menu to appear in Messenger. While the toggle is off, a warning reminds you the menu will not show until activated.

    Add and manage buttons

    Click Edit menu to enter edit mode. Here you can Add button (up to 20), and each row gains a drag handle for reordering plus Edit and Delete actions.

    Toggle any button on or off, and drag the handle on the left to change the order — the order here is exactly what users will see.

    Choose a button type when adding

    In the Add menu button dialog, open the Button type dropdown to choose Redirect to URL, Direct opt-in, or Postback (send a reply).

    For Redirect to URL, enter the destination link (for example https://example.com). Save is enabled once the required fields are filled.

    Edit an existing button

    Click Edit on any button to change it. Set the Button type, the Button text (up to 20 characters), and — for a redirect — the URL it opens.

    Click Save to apply your changes, or Cancel to discard them.

    Reorder buttons and check the preview

    Drag buttons by their handles to reorder them. The Preview at the bottom updates instantly and mirrors exactly what users will see in Messenger.

    When everything looks right, your menu is ready — remember it can take up to 24 hours to appear in Messenger.

Your Messenger menu is ready!

Once activated, your menu appears behind the hamburger button in Messenger. Note that it can take up to 24 hours for an updated menu to appear, and a new menu replaces any previous one.
